Answers... Before You Ask the Questions
We know you may have plenty of questions — and we’re here to answer many of them before you even need to ask. Below you’ll find the most common questions families have about joining the SVYO.
If you still have questions afterward, feel free to reach out. We’re happy to help.
Thank you!
How old does my child have to be to join?
We focus more on musical ability than age — but for eligibility, your child must be 19 years old or younger as of the first day of the season. Some students show promise at a very young age, while others come in with more experience. We’re here to support both.
How much does it cost to join?
Thanks to community support, we’re able to offer one of the most affordable youth orchestra programs in the region.
-
Annual tuition: $750, with a $250 SVYO Merit Scholarship awarded to every accepted musician, bringing the total cost to $500 for the full year (2 seasons).
-
Registration fee: $35 (includes your performance t-shirt).
Flexible payment plans and full-pay discounts are available.
-
Can my child lose their place in the orchestra?
We’re committed to every student’s growth — but participation requires commitment in return. If a student repeatedly misses rehearsals, shows a lack of preparation, or doesn’t respect the ensemble environment, their placement may be reviewed. Every seat is earned and valued.
Where will rehearsals take place?
We’re currently finalizing a permanent home for the SVYO. Until then, we will clearly communicate all rehearsal locations and details to enrolled families.
Do we have to live in Simi Valley to join?
Priority is given to musicians who live or attend school in Simi Valley. However, if there are open spots, we welcome students from neighboring communities.
Who runs the SVYO?
The Simi Valley Youth Orchestra (SVYO) is a program of the Simi Valley Orchestras, directed by film composer Joseph Metcalfe and music supervisor Katie Garibaldi. The SVO contracts Isaac Arias — a respected music educator at Cal Lutheran and Head of Music at Sinaloa Middle School — as conductor of the youth orchestra. David Brisley, music instructor at Monte Vista, is contracted as assistant music director.
How often do you rehearse?
We rehearse weekly throughout the season on Monday evening from 6:30pm-8pm, leading up to three public concerts. You’ll receive a full schedule after your audition.
What’s the rehearsal and performance commitment?
We expect consistent attendance — it’s essential to the ensemble’s progress. While occasional absences may be excused, regular participation is required. If a school-related conflict arises, we’ll work with you to find solutions.
What’s included in the registration and tuition fees?
-
Weekly rehearsals with professional mentorship
-
Access to special workshops and sectionals
-
Access to sheet music and program materials
-
Performance t-shirt (included with $35 registration fee)
-
Participation in three concerts
You’ll be responsible for your child’s own concert attire (e.g. black pants/skirt, dress shoes). If that presents a financial hardship, we’re happy to assist.
-
How do I schedule my child’s audition?
Once your child is registered, you’ll receive an email to set up your SVYO member portal login. From there, you’ll be able to view audition materials and use our MyMusicStaff system to choose an available audition time.
What does the audition involve?
Each audition includes:
-
A prepared piece provided by SVYO
-
A piece of your own choosing that demonstrates your level
-
A short sight-reading or scale test, if requested
Our goal is to place students where they’ll grow best — not to intimidate. We want this to be a positive and encouraging experience.
-
Are there leadership or solo opportunities?
Yes. Principal players and section leaders will be chosen based on auditions and rehearsal performance. A concertmaster will also be selected. Leadership comes with responsibility, but every musician is vital to our success.
Is there a waiting list if my child isn’t accepted this season?
Yes. If your child auditions but we don’t have an available seat, they may be placed on a waitlist and notified when a space opens up. We encourage them to stay connected and continue practicing.
How can parents support the orchestra?
We’ll be forming parent committees to help with concerts, hospitality, and fundraising. Involvement is optional — but deeply appreciated. If you’d like to help, we’ll make it easy to sign up when the time comes.
