Answers... Before You Ask The Questions

We understand you may have a lot of questions... and we're here to pre-empt that by asking, and answering, the questions ourselves. If you still have questions after reading this, please reach out and we'll try to respond ASAP.

Thank you!

We focus more on talent than age. Some children show talent early, and we’re here to nurture that. Many young musicians earn their spot through the experience they’ve gained. The only requirement is that your child must be 19 or younger before the first day of the season.

We are committed to ensuring that EVERY musician is scholarshipped into the program. We want talent, not finances, to determine participation, so there is no cost for young players to join. We may fundraise along the way but we aim to instill in the young players that they have to earn their place, not pay for it!

Our priority is to nurture every musician's development. However, if there are repeated absences, a lack of progress, or disregard for the program, we may need to review your child’s place in the orchestra. Each seat is valuable, and we believe it should be earned, respected, and cherished, as many talented young musicians are waiting for their opportunity.

We are in the process of securing a permanent home for the orchestra. Once finalized, we’ll keep everyone updated. For those accepted into the orchestra, we will ensure clear communication about the location of every rehearsal.

This is an orchestra that represents Simi Valley, so priority is given to Simi Valley residents. However, if we have remaining vacancies, we will consider young musicians from nearby areas.

The SVYO is part of the Simi Valley Orchestras, led by film composer Joseph Metcalfe and music supervisor Katie Garibaldi. They have appointed Isaac Arias, a talented music instructor at Cal Lutheran and Head of Music at Sinaloa Middle School, as the Music Director of the youth orchestra.

The orchestra will rehearse weekly, building up to a grand performance. Once your child successfully auditions, we will share more details about the performance schedule.

We expect 100% attendance at rehearsals and performances, as being part of the orchestra is a priority and helps us grow as a group. While we understand that rare mitigating circumstances may arise, consistent participation is essential. If our rehearsal schedule conflicts with school programs, we will do our best to adjust accordingly.

We aim to cover all aspects of the musician’s experience through scholarships, including sheet music and other materials. However, you will be responsible for your child’s performance attire. If affordability is an issue, we will do our best to assist.

As the orchestra progresses, we will form committees to support its activities. If you’re interested in getting involved, we’ll announce opportunities in advance to ensure everyone has a chance to participate. We may also hold fundraising events occasionally, and while parental support is not required, it will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, a concertmaster will be selected during the audition process, and principal players will be assigned to each section. These leadership roles come with added expectations, but it’s important to note that every musician in the orchestra is equally valued and essential to our success.

Yes, we have a rich network of professionals who will inspire, instruct, and train our young musicians. Our goal is not only to develop the orchestra but to prepare your child for a bright future. These opportunities will go beyond music, providing valuable life lessons and experiences to help them get the most out of their time with us.

Yes, there will be a natural flow of musicians joining and leaving the orchestra based on age and talent. If a space becomes available, we will hold auditions to fill that spot. We encourage young musicians in Simi Valley to aspire to join the orchestra and to stay prepared in case an opportunity arises.
